"The Last One" explores the powerful emotional theme of being or experiencing the last of something—from the last of a species to the last one picked in dodgeball—through evocative music and compelling visual storytelling. The show opens with the haunting introduction to Mozart’s Requiem, the final piece he ever composed, enhanced by poignant narration and the quote, “I fear I’m writing a requiem for myself.” As performers slowly exit the form, one lone member remains, setting the tone for what follows. The first movement introduces the story of the last tribesman, using Native American drum sounds, tribal vocals, and a mic’d flute solo with extended techniques to craft a rich, immersive world. The second movement shifts to the grief of losing a loved one, blending the Dies Irae theme with expressive solos and lush harmonies to stir deep emotion. The show closes with the fierce idea of being "the last one standing," featuring a thrilling percussion battle and an ending that sees every member fall—except for one.
The Last One was commissioned by the Fairview High School Tiger Marching Band from Fairview, PA for their 2016 season. After moving up to a new classification in their circuit, Fairview received 2nd place as well as best music at their state championships.
