The Last of a species on earth to being the last one picked for game of dodge ball. There's a strong emotional attachment to the idea of being or experiencing the last of something. "The Last One" explores this phenomenon through vivid musical and visual presentation.  

The show begins with the introduction to Mozart's Requiem, the last piece he ever wrote!  Beginning with Mozart's famous quote "I fear I'm writing a requiem for myself", soloists add in while more narration is triggered.  After a powerful impact moment, the pit plays a short ending while performers peel off from the form to reveal one person remaining.  

This transitions into the first segment of the show which introducing the last tribesman.  Using dramatic narration and Native American drums sounds, along with the occasional tribal yell and nature sound, the piece begins with a mic'd Flute solo utilizing extended techniques to create a tribal atmosphere.  The narrator tells the story of his tribe and how he is the last remaining member.  The inspirational story is told with various soloistic and full ensemble moments, leaving the audience on the edge of their seat.

The second movement reflects on the idea of a loved one unexpectedly passing away.  Using the Dies Irae theme as a motif, this movement is very reflective.  Utilizing expressive soloistic passages coupled with extended harmonies, this movement pulls on the heart-strings of any audience member.

The aggressive closing movement of the show deals with the idea of "the last one standing".  Beginning with an intense percussion feature each section battles it out to see who can be the last one standing!  The show ends with a sound effect as all of the members of the band fall to the ground....except for one

The Last One was commissioned by the Fairview High School Tiger Marching Band from Fairview, PA for their 2016 season.  After moving up to a new classification in their circuit, Fairview received 2nd place as well as best music at their state championships.

The Front ensemble music for this show would be considered intermediate (3).  Using the WGI classification system, it would most likely be considered in the upper level of A-class.  The glock/xylo/crotale and Vibe parts are generally on the easier side with the marimba containing elements pushing grade 4 or WGI Open class.   Vocabulary for each instrument is labeled below:

  • 8th note based flam drag and flam five patterns at 168BPM
  • Quarter note triplet based alternating flam patterns at 168BPM
  • 8th note based same hand flam patterns at 168BPM
  • Triplet rolls at 108, 120, and 168BPM (2 count max) 
  • Herta patterns with left hand accents at 168BPM

Tenor Drums

  • Contains the same vocabulary as the snares listed above as well as:
